COURSE DESCRIPTION: (2 Units) Comparison of nursing and health care in international venues with that of the U.S. Involves travel as a group to cities in the Philippines.

- Meet with nursing faculty and students

- Observe in classrooms

- Discuss similarities and differences

- Visit hospitals and clinics

- Discuss research in nursing



COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. Compare the nursing and health care  
system of the Philippines with that of
the U.S. in relation to:
 
  a. Educational preparation of nurses, 
  levels of nursing education and
  practice,and licensure requirements.
  b. Professionalization of nursing
  c. Health care economics 
  d. Selected indicators of health status

2. Compare health care venues (e.g.,
 
hospitals, clinics)

3. Compare recent research in nursing in
China with that in the U.S.

Course Structure and Process:

Students will be required to participate in seminars and discussion prior to travel to the Philippines accompanied by the course instructor.

 
Assignments:

Students will be required to participate in seminars and to keep a journal that documents comparisons within and between countries visited with that of the U.S. In addition, the journal will contain the students’ responses and reaction to what they have seen and experienced. Students may choose to include the journal in a portfolio which documents achievement of objectives through presentation of photos and memorabilia.

Evaluation:

Evaluation will be based upon participation in seminars and activities, and completeness of the journal. The journal must be submitted within one week after the end of the course.

The university grading system will be used
(A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 70-79, D = 60-69, F = 59 and below; CR/NC).

Required Textbooks and Readings:


Handouts and articles will be assigned related to the country (China) to be visited.


Fees and Associated Costs:

Students must register for the course. Students will be responsible for their own travel expenses.

Students must purchase an international student identification card and travel insurance.

The course and student participation will adhere to guidelines of the SFSU Office of International Programs.
